Arsenal vs Chelsea Preview

Arsenal's defeat to West Ham has left the club tied on the 5th spot in the Premier League table with a resurgent Manchester United. It was the third defeat for Unai Emery's men from their previous six outings. This follows a sequence of 13 Premier League games in which the Gunners remained undefeated.

Against the Hammers, Arsenal looked short of confidence, committing a high number of errors, getting caught offside quite often and despite the nearly 60 per cent possession, finishing poorly.

They have a strong test ahead of them on Saturday when get ready to receive a Chelsea side who seemed to have recovered after the home shocker at Stamford Bridge against Leicester City last December. Since then, Maurizio Sarri's Blues have gone through 4 games without losing and in fact, winning three of them.

Chelsea are momentarily comfortably ensconced in the fourth spot with a six-point lead over their Saturday's rivals and go to the Emirates with a psychological edge.

The Gunners will be without some of their key players for Saturday's crucial clash. Henrikh Mkhitaryan with a broken metatarsal, Rob Holding with a knee injury and Danny Welbeck (ankle) are all set to miss January 19th's outing.

Hector Bellerin who looks to be in the process of recovery at the back and was introduced during last week's game against West Ham, could start off at the Emirates and so could Lucas Torreira who was rested in the outing with the Hammers.`

Mesut Ozil may still not find favour with Emery given his erratic form, this despite the German midfielder being fully fit.

The Arsenal line-up could thus look like this playing in a 3-4-2-1 formation: Leno (goal); Mustafi, Sokratis, Koscielny; Bellerin, Guendouzi, Torreira, Monreal; Aubameyang, Iwobi; Lacazette.

For Chelsea, Alvaro Morata could be doubtful, having sustained a hamstring injury, but even if he does recover, Sarri may have him sidelined what with the Spanish striker eyeing a January exit. 22-year old attacking midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek could be ruled out for months with doctors hinting at a ankle-surgery.

Eden Hazard could thus find himself in a False-nine role with the other two protagonists of the Chelsea attack being Pedro and Willian.

Predicted Chelsea line-up in a 4-3-3 formation: Kepa (goal); Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso; Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic; Pedro, Hazard, Willian.

Based on current form, the odds are on the visitors taking three points from Saturday evening's clash at the Emirates although a drawn game also looks a strong possibility.

Chelsea's last four games were 1-2 and 0-1 away wins over Watford and Crystal Palace, a 0-0 draw to Southampton and a 2-1 home win over Newcastle.

For Arsenal, a win is a must, for they could find themselves trading places with 6th placed Manchester United even if a draw were to materialize at the Emirates.
