- Leipzig's Timo Werner all set for July move to Stamford Bridge
Chelsea fans are rejoicing big time as the South London club have agreed to sign RB Leipzig star Timo Werner for a staggering fee of £102.5m.
In the current season alone, he has found the back of the net on 32 occasions across all competitions.
Werner is renowned for his pace, movement, link-up play and finishing ability.
The German international has agreed to terms set by Chelsea but will remain with his current club for the rest of the Bundesliga season. He has been capped 29 times for Germany and scored 11 international goals.
Werner will be joining his new club in July after passing the necessary medical tests. His move would mean he will not be able to represent Leipzig in the Champions League quarter-finals in August.
Stamford Bridge are offering Werner a weekly wage of around £175,000 which is double his current pay and a £12m fee to his agent Karlheinz Forster, taking the total outlay to more than £100m.
Werner said:
“I am delighted to be signing for Chelsea, it is a very proud moment for me to be joining this great club. I of course want to thank RB Leipzig, the club and the fans, for four fantastic years. You will forever be in my heart. I look forward to next season with my new team-mates, my new manager and of course the Chelsea fans.Together we have a very successful future ahead of us.”
Werner was occasionally used on the left wing before moving into the center permanently when he started his career at Stuttgart way back in 2013.
He was quite occasionally seen in the role of a winger while playing for the national team in recent years, as head coach Joachim Low valued Werner's speed over his ability to be a striker upfront.
However, Julian Nagelsmann, who joined as Leipzig head coach in 2019, saw more potential in Werner as a striker who could quickly move into a midfield role and act as the temporary number 10.
At Leipzig he has most often been deployed in a front two, but he can also play out wide in a front three or as the central striker
Werner's arrival will give strength to the Chelsea line-up and will offer Lampard the option of playing in a 4-4-2 alongside someone like Tammy Abraham or out wide in a front three formation.
Now it remains to be seen if his contribution will be enough to turn the Blues into title contenders.
Werner is Chelsea's second signing for next season after they completed a £37m deal for Ajax winger Hakim Ziyech in February.
