Of late, Chelsea have looked a shadow of last season’s Premier League title winning side. They have fallen five points behind Tottenham Hotspurs in fourth place. They have lost four out of their last six matches and are now on the cusp of missing champions league football next season if their performances and results don’t improve drastically. This game on Saturday is a must win for them as it could be very essential in putting them back on track for the top four race. It would also give Antonio Conte some breathing space, as the Italian has had some doubts called over his future at the club.

The arrival of Olivier Giroud in the last transfer window was supposed to be the much needed plan B his team needed to help them see games off, but that plan hasn’t exactly taken off, with the side still struggling to score goals and put opposition defences to the sword.

If however, they can’t defeat one of the worst performing teams in the league in their next game, it would be a new low in the team’s already recent poor run of form.

Crystal Palace gave a thrilling first half performance against Manchester United on Monday, and even though the quality of their opponents showed eventually on the result sheet, their fans would have been encouraged by the performance as it showed that they could have the firepower to cause some damage to a bigger opposition.

Besides, they go into this match on the back of two wins in their last two fixtures at Stamford Bridge, when they won 2-1 in both fixtures.

The season started really poorly for them with a poor run of form that led to the sacking of Frank de Boer. Roy Hodgson’s appointment gave them a brief respite, and they started displaying some decent form, until a combination of losing key players to injury and some tough fixtures pushed them back down the table to relegation waters.

They have failed to win any of their last six Premier League matches, losing to all the top six sides they played against, and it doesn’t look like they will be causing an upset anytime soon.

Willian could be an important influence in this match as he has proven of late to be a major catalyst in Chelsea’s attack, and he will be a major handful for a Palace defence that hasn’t exactly proven to be a strong one. Eden Hazard’s quality will also shine through and together with Willian, they could make all the difference in this match.

Prediction: these two teams seem to be fans of 2-1 as evidenced by their recent results. This could also end with the same score line, in Chelsea’s favour.
