Everton v Liverpool Preview

The Reds regained their usual composure with a 2-1 win against Bournemouth after a shock 3-0 defeat by Watford, a week before the before the lockdown and are now within sniffing distance of their first Premier League title in 30 years.
Everton had shown an uptick in form since Carlo Ancelotti took over from beleaguered manager Duncan Ferguson in December and only four sides in the Premier League have picked up more points over the last 15 games, they being Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Sheffield United.
The Toffees however got a wake-up call just before the break when they were trounced 0-4 at Stamford Bridge by Chelsea, leaving them tottering at the 12th place and very much outside the range of a Europa League entry for the 2020-21 season.
Ancelotti will depend heavily on Richarlison to deliver something at least on Sunday.
The Brazilian forward has netted 12 goals in the current season and formed a potent partnership with Dominic Calvert-Lewin upfront.
They are expected to trouble a Liverpool defence that looked shaky before the break as evident in their defeats to Watford and in the Champions League ouster against Atletico Madrid.
The team news for Everton is that midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin is injured along with striker Cenk Tosun while central midfielder Andre Gomes remains suspended.
For Liverpool, goalkeeper Alisson has had time to recover from injury and should start in the derby.
The usual suspects upfront Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are all likely to feature in Jurgen Klopp's starting line-up at the Goodison Park.
Salah has scored 5 goals in his last 6 Premier League appearances and will be looking to return in similar form on Sunday. Divock Origi has a superb record in this fixture with 5 goals in his last 7 clashes against Everton.
Given this stellar record against his forthcoming opponents, he could be expected to be introduced at some stage of the game.
Sadio Mane, however, has scored on three occasions against the Toffees and he looks a solid bet to add to his tally of 14 league goals this season.
Liverpool have a 78-62 advantage with 54 draws from 164 previous matches against Everton.
The last two meetings at Goodison Park have ended in draws while Liverpool claimed a 5-2 victory in the reverse fixture at Anfield.
Under Ancelotti, the hosts have gone through their 5 previous games at home without losing, in fact, winning three of them.
But,there is little doubt that Liverpool needing just 2 more wins from their 9 remaining games, will want to end their campaign in style and it’s unlikely Everton will be able to stop them.
Moreover, Everton have the sixth-worst defensive record in the league and Liverpool’s attackers will be drooling at the prospect of getting more than just a few past the Everton custodian.
