Olivier Giroud should figure in the Chelsea vs Leeds United

Updated: 18th September 2024

2020-21 English Premier league preview: Everton vs Chelsea – Goodison Park – Saturday, 12 December 2020 – 20:00hrs BST

Chelsea pay a visit to Merseyside to play an out-of-form Everton in another significant fixture at Goodison Park for the title hopefuls.

Frank Lampard's Blues have been in fine fettle and are just a couple of points away from the top. Chelsea are fresh from an emphatic entry into the Round of 16 of the Champions' League and gone through their 9 last Premier League games unbeaten.

For Everton, things have gone from bad to worse with Carlo Ancelotti's Toffees having to endure their fourth defeat from the last five outings when they lost 0-1 to Leeds at home last weekend. Everton are thus five points away from their weekend rivals in the 9th place with 17 points from their 11 outings this season.

Everton Premier League form: LLLWLD

Chelsea Premier League form: WWDWWD

The Toffees will still be without Lucas Digne and Seamus Coleman, compelling Tom Davies and Alex Iwobi to take up wing-back roles. Midfielder Fabian Delph used in that space against Burnley, has been sidelined having hobbled off in that game.

Everton will essentially depend on Dominic Calvert-Lewin to get goals if possible on Sunday. The young English international has 11 goals from 11 games making him the top Premier League goal-getter ahead of the likes of Heung-min Son and Mohammad Salah.

Olivier Giroud suddenly seems to have become Chelsea's “go-to” man after his four-goal haul against Sevilla and his ability to score late winners.

The 34-year old French striker will most probably start in place of Tammy Abraham who could be introduced at some point of the game. Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech are ruled out owing to injuries but Lampard is no short of options with Christian Pulisic and the mercurial Timo Werner leading the attack.

Everton probable starting XI:

Pickford (goal); Godfrey, Mina, Keane; Davies, Allan, Doucoure, Iwobi; Rodriguez, Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison

Chelsea probable starting XI:

Mendy (goal); James, Zouma, Silva, Chilwell; Kovacic, Kante, Mount; Pulisic, Giroud, Werner

Everton vs Chelsea Verdict

Lampard's men who now look compact in defense and threatening in their attacks have shipped in only 2 goals while score as many as 12 from their last 6 Premier League outings. It's hard not to see them get a few past a struggling Everton side and register their first win at Goodison Park in three attempts since 2017.
