2020-21 FA Cup 3rd round preview: Arsenal vs Newcastle – Emirates stadium – Saturday, 9 January 2021 – 17:30 BST

Mikel Arteta's Gunners will be looking to book a berth in the 4th round of the FA Cup when they host a struggling Newcastle at the Emirates stadium on January 9th, Saturday evening.

Arsenal will be going into the3rd round clash on the back of three consecutive Premier League victories while their opponents are still winless from their last six EPL outings.

After a 1-4 trouncing by Manchester City in the EFL Cup quarter-finals, Arteta's men have recovered well to overcome Chelsea, Brighton & Hove and West Bromwich in their last three league fixtures to rise into 11th position of the Premier League table.

Steve Bruce's Magpies have had a disappointing run this season, garnering 19 points from their 16 Premier League matches and leaving them tottering in the 15th spot of the points table.

Arsenal will have more strength in the midfield with the return of summer signing Thomas Partey from a thigh injury. Arteta may ring in the changes with the likes of Dani Ceballos, Cedric Soares, Alex Runarsson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Gabriel Martinelli and Joe Willock all in line for starts.

As for Newcastle, Ryan Fraser and Allan Saint-Maximin are still unavailable, while Jamaal Lascelles remains a huge doubt having not yet recovered from coronavirus. Midfielder Isaac Hayden is available following a one-game ban, but Bruce may choose to give other untested players a go on Saturday.

Paul Dummett, Dwight Gayle, Martin Dubravka, Jeff Hendrick and Javi Manquillo should all qualify for starts on Saturday, while the duo of Jonjo Shelvey and Jacob Murphy could find spots in the midfield.

Arsenal as the holders of the FA Cup will feel more confident going into the 3rd round Emirates clash while Newcastle having lost 14 of their last 15 outings with the Gunners will distinctly be the underdogs.
