FC Koln vs RB Leipzig Preview

RB Leipzig missed an opportunity to move to the second spot when they drew 2-2 at home against an unfancied Hertha Berlin side. This is the second draw for the Red Bulls after their return from the pandemic break.

Their only win in the last three games was a 0-5 thrashing of Mainz. Coach Julian Nagelsmann‘s men now travel to Cologne on June 1 to play and out of form FC Koln in a 29th round fixture of the Bundesliga 2019-20.

Leipzig have so far garnered 55 points from their 28 League outings and are in the third place and a couple of points behind Borussia Dortmund.

FC Koln's return from the the break has been disastrous. The Cologne club has gone through three winless games on the trot – draws against Mainz and Fortuna Dusseldorf and a 1-3 defeat to 1899 Hoffenheim on Wednesday.

As a result, they find themselves teethering at the eleventh place and even out of contention for next season's Europa League.

Even though not at the best, the Leipzig attack could be too hot for the hosts to handle at the Rhein Energie stadium on Monday night with the Koln defence having to deal with the likes of Timo Werner, Yusuf Paulson, Kevin Kampl, Patrick Schick and Marcel Sabitzer.

Timo Werner has been by far the Red Bull's top scorer with 28 goals this season followed by Sabitzer with 13.

FC Koln have a flair when it comes to goal-getting. Coach Markus Gisdol's men have racked up a tally off 44 goals, which is more than any side outside the Bundesliga's top 5 this season.

With folks like Jhon Cardoba ( 11 goals ), Sebastian Bornauw and Mark Uth (5 goals each), one can expect goals on both sides at the Rhein Energie clash.

Nagelsmann's side have solid figures to show in away games. Of the 14 fixtures on the road, the Red Bulls have won 8, drawn 4 and lost in only 2.

They also have shown a propensity to blow away lesser sides as they demonstrated in the 8-0 and 0-5 wins over Mainz and Schalke earlier in the season.

FC Koln's tendency to leak goals heavily (52 in the season so far) may present Leipzig with an opportunity to win big.

Koln's record has been better at home this season- 6W/3D/ 5L compared to 4W/1D/9L on the road.

On a head-to-head basis, Leipzig have won three of their last 5 encounters with Koln since September 2016 and lost only once –  which is why the UK betting sites odds are heavily in favour of the visitors to the Rhein Energie stadium on June 1.
