UEFA Champions' League Group F preview – Lazio vs Club Brugge – Stadio Olimpico, Rome – Tuesday, 8 December 2020 – 17:55 BST

Lazio vs Club Brugge Preview

Club Brugge will hope to pull off an upset when they visit Rome to play Lazio in a critical Group F game which will see one of the two teams progress into the Round of 16. Lazio have 9 points so far, one behind already-qualified Borussia Dortmund and two above Brugge, with whom they drew 1-1 in the first leg away in Belgium last month.

Brugge have gone unbeaten in their last four games in the Belgian First Division A games and have just come out of a 1-0 win over Sint-Truiden on Saturday. Lazio on the other hand were made to toil for a 2-1 win against bottom-half side Spezia in a Serie A clash last weekend.

Lazio coach Inzaghi will have to choose two center backs from among Wesley Hoedt, Patric, Luiz Felipe and Stefan Radu to assist Francesco Acerbi at the back. Mohamed Fares may return for the hosts on the opposite flank to Manuel Lazzari but striker Vedat Muriqi and midfielder Senad Lulic are both expected to miss out owing to injuries.

Brugge boss Phillipe Clement has no injury issues to deal with as such with Emmanuel Dennis and Dutch winger Noa Lang the favourites to start alongside in-form attacking midfielder Charles De Ketelaere.

Brandon Mechele and Odilon Kossounou will form the central defensive pairing at the back ahead of goalkeeping stalwart Simon Mignolet with all three having tested negative for Covid-19 recently.

Club Brugge probable XI in a 4-3-3 formation:

Mignolet (goal); Mata, Mechele, Kossounou, Ricca; Vormer, Balanta, Vanaken; Dennis, De Ketelaere, Lang

Lazio probable XI in a 3-5-2 formation:

Reina (goal); Patric, Acerbi, Hoedt; Marusic, Milinkovic-Savic, Leiva, Alberto, Fares; Correa, Immobile

Though Lazio are the UK bookmakers‘ favourites to progress, Brugge who need to win at all costs will be no pushovers. The Belgian side have a good record in away games in the Champions' League having lost only 2 of their last 7 outings on the road in the competition.

Moreover  their Rome-based rivals have not kept a clean sheet in any of their 16 most recent Champions' League group games including their last eight at home – something that will give heart to Brugge.

Lazio just needs a draw to move into the knock-out stages but expect a tough encounter at the Stadio Olimpico on December 9th night.
