Liverpool land Brazilian keeper Alisson for a record £66 million Updated for March 2025

Alisson Becker

Updated: 19th March 2025

In a surprise move, Jurgen Klopp went ahead and signed Brazilian and Roma No.1 goalkeeper, Alisson Becker, for £66 million which is a record amount paid for a custodian ever.

A new goal-keeper was very much on the cards at Anfield especially after Loris Karius's horror show at the UEFA Champions League finals and Simon Mignolet falling out of favour with Klopp.

But the German coach although confirming Alisson as the first-choice goalkeeper said that Karius will have another chance to prove himself with Liverpool during the 2018-19 season.

The Brazilian custodian who arrived at Anfiled on a six-year deal will be the fourth Liverpool acquisition after midfielders Naby Keita (from RB Leipzig), and Fabinho (from Monaco) and winger Xherdan Shaqiri (from Stoke City).

The Merseyside club's bid to snare attacking Lyon mid-fielder Nabil Fekir for £53 million came a cropper with club chairman Jean-Michel Aulas stating that the 25-year old Frenchman will very much stay on.

Meanwhile Manchester United are looking hard at Leicester City defender Harry Maguire who was so impressive for England at the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Macguire could cost close to £65 million which is why Mourinho might have to offload someone like Anthony Martial who spent most of last season warming the benches.

Bayern Munich are interested in the 22-year old United forward, but the management at Old Trafford are not willing to release Martial for less than £89 million.

Manchester United haven't made a major signing this season, the only three ones done so far being Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant who are no great shakes by any means.

Mourinho is also tight-lipped about rumored deals for Real Madrid's Gareth Bale and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowksi apart from a potential landing of Chelsea winger Willian who played under the Portuguese coach once.

Willian, in fact, has attracted the interest of Barcelona who are willing to pay £66 million for the Brazilian, an offer Stamford Bridge seriously seems to be considering.

But that move would hinge on Chelsea securing CSKA Moscow forward Aleksandr Golovin as his replacement.

The Blues, it is learnt, are on the threshold of a £26.5 million deal with Golovin who just rejected a bid from Monaco and chose Stamford Bridge as his preferred destination.

Meanwhile. Croatian mid-fielder Mateo Kovacic has made his intentions of leaving Real Madrid clear.
The Spanish giants may be willing to let the 24-year old Kovacic go considering he appeared in 36 games last season and was not able to get a single goal.

Crystal Palace and Fulham are gunning for Andre Schurrle, the 27-year old German international winger from Borussia Dortmund.

The Bundesliga giants are particularly interested in Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha, but the management at Selhurst Park want nothing less than £60 million for their champion winger.

Palace could however end up signing Michail Antonio of West Ham for £25 million if the move for Schurrle does not go through and the good part of it would be that Zaha will get to stay.
