A mouth-watering contest lies in store as title-holders Liverpool host table-toppers Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Wednesday for a critical Premier League clash. Both sides are on 25 points with Spurs heading the points table by virtue of a goal difference.

While Jurgen Klopp's Reds have come out of an underwhelming 1-1 draw against minions Fulham, Jose Mourinho's Spurs were held to a draw by a similar margin by Crystal Palace.

Both teams have an identical record of 7 wins, 4 draws and 1 defeat so far in the 2020-21 Premier League season. While Liverpool has a formidable home record – winning all their six PL fixtures at Anfield this season, Spurs have remained unbeaten in similar number of outings on the road with four wins and two draws in their away games.

While the Reds have sailed into the Round of 16 of the Champions' League, Tottenham, too, have qualified for the knock-out stages of the Europa League.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Team News

For Liverpool the team news is that defender Joel Matip will be unavailable for the Anfield clash having been taken off at half time due to back spasms in the Fulham game last weekend. Rhys Williams or Nathaniel Phillips could take the center-back's place alongside Fabinho, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson at the back.

A big blow for the team attack will be the absence of the in-form Wolves import Diogo Jota who could be out for a couple of months at least after picking up an injury in the Champions League game against FC Midtjylland last week. Key players like Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, James Milner, Thiago Alcantara and Xherdan Shaqiri also remain sidelined while Naby Keita joins the injured list after sustaining fresh muscle pains.

Mourinho's fitness concerns are not as severe with midfielder Erik Lamela being the only absentee. Real Madrid loanee Gareth Bale who missed the weekend game against Crystal Palace owing to illness is expected to be fit for the December 16 clash.

Son Heung-min and Harry Kane are most certainly expected to start for the Spurs being their main attacking duo. Son is already the second highest scorer after Dominic Calvert-Lewin of Everton with 10 goals from his 12 games in the Premier League so far in the current season.

Livrpool will be handicapped by the absence of the goal-hungry Jota but still have the formidable trio of Sadio Mane, Mohmmad Salah and Roberto Firmino upfront.

Liverpool probable starting XI:

Alisson (goal); Alexander-Arnold, Williams/Phillips, Fabinho, Robertson; Henderson, Wijnaldum, Jones; Salah, Firmino, Mane

Tottenham Hotspur probable starting XI:

Lloris (goal); Aurier, Alderweireld, Dier, Reguilon; Sissoko, Hojbjerg; Bergwijn, Ndombele, Son; Kane

Liverpool vs Tottenham Verdict

Liverpool have a strong history against their midweek rivals, winning each of the last five meetings across all competitions and have lost in only one of their 26 fixtures at Anfield. But it's a different time and a different setting altogether with a Spurs side in the form of their lives.

Klopp's team despite boasting one of the best defenses in the Premier League have conceded 18 goals, which is the most by any side in the top-half thus providing enough motivation for the likes of Son and Kane to find the back of the net at Anfield.

A 1-1 at 7/1 or 2-2 draw at 14/1 both with Bet365  looks the most likely outcome on Wednesday night although UK bookmakers seem to be wagering on a Liverpool win.
