With still seven games in the Premier League left, Liverpool go into Thursday evening's clash at the Etihad as reigning champions to face a in-form Manchester City thirsting for revenge.

Pep Guardiola's City have just come out of a FA Cup semi-final win over Newcastle on Sunday but were found wanting in a 1-2 loss to Chelsea in a Premier League clash prior to that.

Liverpool having being knocked out of the FA Cup before the pandemic break are the more rested side of the two and have taken off where they left in the Premier League, beating a hapless Crystal Palace 4-0 on their return.

City will probably without their key scorer, Sergio Aguero, going into the Etihad clash.

The Argentine striker had to undergo a knee surgery after the injury got aggravated during the recent win over Burnley and could well miss a better part of the remainder of the season.

Center-back Eric Garcia is still in the midst of a lengthy treatment and may not be back just yet. Central mid-fielder Fernandinho is ruled out owing to a two-match red-card suspension during the Chelsea game.

As for Liverpool team news, James Milner could be recovering from a hamstring injury sustained against Everton a week ago and remains doubtful for Thursday's Etihad clash.

Xherdan Shaqiri is slowly edging towards a comeback from a calf injury which has kept him out for the majority of the year so far, but looks unlikely to feature in the City clash.

Apart from that, Jurgen Klopp has a fully fit squad to pick his starting eleven from.

Compared to Liverpool who have had just two outings after the return – a draw against Everton and a win over Crystal Palace – City have enjoyed more playing time and scored goals galore.

Barring their 1-2 hiccup against the Blues at Stamford Bridge, the Citizens have rattled up scorelines like 3-0, 5-0 and 2-0 against Arsenal, Burnley and Newcastle respectively.

On the other hand, Liverpool's top-scorers Mohammad Salah and Sadio Mane haven't lost their pre-break touch either, getting goals in the victory over Crystal Palace and will be raring to go at the Etihad on July 2nd.

The worrying thing for City's opponents is that even reserve players like Phil Foden and Riyad Mahrez are among goals. Kevin de Bruyne is in the form of his life while Raheem Sterling is making scoring goals a habit, notching up 21 Premier league goals already for the season.

On a head-to-head basis Liverpool have got the better of their forthcoming opponents in four of the the last seven times they have faced each other across all competitions since 2018.

City have won two while one match settled for a draw. The last clash was at Anfield in December 2019 which Klopp's Reds won 3-1.

Manchester City will form a guard of honour for the new champions before proceeding into a game that promises to be a cracker.

Despite an unconvincing history against Liverpool, bettors are wagering on Pep Guardiola's men to take three points against a side that might just be a bit complacent having been declared champions.
