RB Leipzig vs Atletico Madrid Preview

Atletico Madrid are on tenterhooks after two club members were tested positive with just days to go for their Champions League quarter-final clash with RB Leipzig.

The Club's preparations took a jolt on Sunday when two unidentified individuals were forced to self-isolate and proper retests will have to be carried out to ensure they come back negative before the outfit travels to Portugal for Thursday's clash.

Diego Simeone's men had moved to the Last 8 in March-mid on the back of a stunning win over title-holders Liverpool at Anfield.

After a tight 1-0 win in Madrid in the first leg, the La Liga side were down on aggregate by 1-2 at half-time at Anfield but two sensational strikes by Marcos Llorente and one by Alvaro Morata in the final 23 minutes of play handed Los Colchoneros a much-deserved quarter-final berth.

Atletico's feat is commendable considering they lost key players like Antoine Griezmann, Rodri, Lucas Hernandez and Diego Godin in one go last summer.

Simone's men have gone without being beaten in the La Liga from their 11 outings after returning from the pandemic break, finishing 3rd on the League table.

Defense will still be Atletico's forte even without the invincible Godin around.

The back-line will comprise of regulars Jose Gimenez, Renan Lodi, Stefan Savic and ex-Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier.

The ever-dependable Koke will be marshalling the mid-field while the attack will be spearheaded by Morata and Diego Costa.

Llorente could come in off the bench midway through the game. One of the best in the business, Jan Oblak, will man the posts.

RB Leizig who progressed to the quarter finals in March looked dangerous when they brushed aside Champions League runners-up Tottenham 4-0 on aggregate, but with the departure of star striker Timo Werner to Chelsea, their attack could be rendered toothless against one of Europe’s most stubborn defences.

Werner netted 32 of Leipzig's 95 goals across all competitions during the 2019-20 campaign, including 26 in 33 Bundesliga appearances, and the striker’s absence is sure to harm the club big time going ahead.

Coach Julian Nagelsmann may now have to look primarily to his midfield for attacking inspiration and even in a Werner-less scenario folks like Konrad Laimer, Kevin Kampl, Tyler Adams and Marcel Sabitzer can be a handful for any opponent.

For goals, Leipzig will now depend on the likes of Patrik Schick, Yussuf Poulsen, Emil Fosberg and Ademola Lookman.

Simone's side have maintained 18 clean sheets this season, 6 of which have come after the restart. Atletico will, therefore, see themselves more than capable of handling whatever a Werner-less Leipzig could throw at them.

Leipzig have achieved only two clean sheets since the restart, but it would be foolish to judge them on the strength of such a statistic.

This year’s one-leg, all or nothing format could work in favour of the underdog and Nagelsmann’s men have shown themselves to be more than capable of rising to a challenge – with or without Timo Werner.
