Sheffield United v Chelsea Preview

Frank Lampard's Blues head for Bramall lane on Saturday to play Sheffield United who seem to have come out strongly from their post-return jitters with consecutive wins over Tottenham and Wolves over the week.

Chelsea begun their post-pandemic resumption on a much stronger note with wins over Aston Villa, Watford, Crystal Palace and a huge one over erstwhile champions Manchester City in end-June.

But a 2-3 blemish against bottom-half side West Ham and a very narrow win over a struggling Palace in their last fixture are things which rival coach Chris Wilder will not fail to notice.

Fitness issues continue to plague Lampard going into Saturday's clash.

Star playmaker N'Golo Kante hasn't recovered from a hamstring injury and may take a week at least to come back to playing shape as reports suggest.

Another midfielder Mateo Kovacic looks doubtful thanks to a injured Achilles. Defender Fikayo Tomori is one more to the list of Chelsea casualties having sustained a “minor setback in training” as Lampard put it.

For Sheffield, Luke Freeman, John Fleck, Jack O'Connell, Leon Clarke and John Lundstram are all ruled out for the 11th July home clash.

Chelsea are in rich goal-scoring form with the likes of Tammy Abraham, Olivier Giroud, Willian, Christian Pulisic and Ross Barkley finding the back of the net frequently.

This could be a real test for a Sheffield side that boasts one of the best defenses in the Premier League.

The Blades, on the other hand, are getting over their shaky performances at home.

Having won just three of their 10 Premier League fixtures in calendar year 2020 at Bramall lane, Sheffield United are unbeaten in five home matches (4 wins, 1 draw), in the current year.

This is their best unbeaten run of the season at home. With Wednesday's victory over Wolverhampton, Sheffield United have won three consecutive home Premier League games for the first time since August 1993.

While there is little to complain of their defense, Sheffield are not short of firepower, too – Oli McBurnie, David McGoldrick, Lys Mousset, Billy Sharp and the talented young newcomer Richairo Zivkovic could all prove to be a handful for a Blues backline that has conceded goals in 4 of their 5 previous League clashes.

Chelsea, currently placed third, will be anxious to secure three points at Bramall Lane on Saturday what with Leicester and Manchester United breathing down their necks.

The Blues were held to a 2-2 draw by their weekend opponents in their reverse fixture at Stamford Bridge in August last year – something that will be playing at the back of their minds they take to the field on July 11th.

UK Bookmakers‘ odds are on Chelsea taking three points at Bramall lane but the match could get much tougher than the odds below suggest.
