Sheffield United v Wolverhampton Preview

Chris Wilder's Sheffield exceeded expectations when they returned to the Premier League last season, but fell just shy of their European dreams when they finished 9th on the points table.

The Blades displayed good home form at Bramall Lane, where they raked in 33 of their 54 points, a feat they would want to replicate this season.

Wilder's men open their 2020-21 campaign at home against Wolverhampton, a side against whom they performed admirably despite the latter ‘s superior position on the table.

The Blades grabbed a 1-1 draw away the Molineux where Lys Mousset opened the scoring in the 2nd minute of play and Matt Doherty equalized just after the hour-mark for the Wolves.

The return game at Bramall Lane in July post the pandemic break saw the hosts get a 90th minute goal to seal a dramatic win and end Wolves’ hopes of finishing in the top four.

Nuno Espirito Santo's men will look to rectify last season's blemish when they visit Bramall Lane for their opener on Monday.

The Wolves' defense have been given a boost with the signing of Brazilian defender Fernando Marcal from surprise Champions League semi-finalists Lyon.

The attack which already has the likes of Portuguese international Diogo Jota, Raul Jimenez and Adama Traore will be bolstered by the arrival of Porto wonderkid, 18-year old Fabio Silvo.

On the flip side, Helder Costa and Matt Doherty will be no longer part of the team having moved to Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

For September 14th's opener Santo will be without two players as Jonny Otto is out long-term with a knee injury and Adama Traore tested positive for COVID-19.

Wilder’s transfers during the offseason do not offer much hope for improvement though having signed two goalkeepers and four defenders. They have set their sights on Swansea forward Rhian and there is a possibility of former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge coming in on a free transfer.

Sheffield have proved themselves to be a tight defensive unit, conceding just 39 goals last season and shipping in only 15 at home in 2019-20 – which is likely to be a key facet of their game plan going into the 2020-21 campaign.

Goalkeeper Manchester United loanee Dean Henderson who was such a key component of the Sheffield defense has returned to his parent club, but new signing, 21-year old Aaron Ramsdale from Bournemouth looks a perfect replacement.

September 13th's game between two very good defensive teams holds the prospect of a very low-scoring affair.

Wolves do have better attacking players, but that counted for little last season as they failed to register a win over Sheffield from both their outings.

Wolves scored 51 goals last season compared to a paltry 39 for the Blades.

Moreover, Sheffield will be without the services of Henderson who saved many a game for the team and will start this season with the inexperienced Ramsdale – something that should work in the Wolves favour.

Nuno Santo's side are the better one in terms of talent and without European commitments, Wolves should be able to pick up three points at the Bramall Lane on the 14th.

But the home side will be a tough nut to crack and it would be foolish to completely rule out a Sheffield win.
