New Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and Jose Mourinho face off each other in the dugout for the first time as Spurs host their city rivals for a critical Premier League encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Thursday night.
Mourinho's men, playing without the talismanic Harry Kane, were stunned out of their wits last weekend when they went down 0-1 to a lowly Brighton & Hove Albion when there were 3 easy points for the taking even without their prime striker absent. This came on the back of a 1-3 loss to Liverpool at home, leaving them on 33 points and 6th on the table.
Debuting with a tentative 0-0 draw with an out-of-form Wolves outfit, Tuchel scored his first win from the Chelsea dugout, as a professional performance from the Blues helped dispatch off a dogged Burnley 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. The West London outfit go into the February 4th clash on level points with their forthcoming rivals but with a slight disadvantage of having played a game more.
Tottenham Hotspur Premier League form: D-W-D-W-L-L
Chelsea Premier League form: D-L-W-L-D-W
Kane, obviously, is ruled out for the Spurs with an ankle injury that would keep him out for at least a couple of weeks. Dele Alli also cannot come in owing to a tendon injury. Tanguy Ndombele who was hurt in the match against Brighton looks doubtful for the Thursday game while Giovani Lo Celso and Sergio Reguilon are definitely out. Gareth Bale's poor showing in the Brighton defeat may not earn him a berth in the starting XI and he could well be replaced by Carlos Vinicius.
For Chelsea, N'Golo Kante has fully recovered from a hamstring injury and could start in midfield. Christian Pulisic could hope to earn a start while Tuchel could give the out-of-form Kai Havertz a pass.
Tottenham Hotspur predicted XI in a 3-4-3 formation: Hugo Lloris (goal); Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Joe Rodon; Matt Doherty, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko, Ben Davies; Steven Bergwijn, Carlos Vinicius, Son Heung-Min
Chelsea predicted XI in a 3-4-3 formation: Edouard Mendy (goal); Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger; Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mateo Kovacic, N'Golo Kante, Marcos Alonso; Mason Mount, Christian Pulisic, Timo Werner
As for the North London clash, Chelsea could be allowed to dominate possession, something in which new boss Tuchel revels, while the hosts will look to hit on the breaks through the speedy Son Heung-Min and Bergwijn. Spurs, who have now failed to score in three of their last four top-flight meetings with the visitors, will be further handicapped in the scoring department by the absence of Son's constant partner in attack, Harry Kane. With the Blues yet to concede a goal under Tuchel, things could definitely look up for them at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on February 4th night.
