How to Make a Profit from Backing Horses Each Way

Betfred Each Way Places for today's and tomorrow's horse racing

When backing the horses, it makes sense to bet with bookmakers who pay out an extra place.

This means more winnings will be returned if your bet gets placed each way. An extra place means the difference of at least a part return on your bet, and if the odds are big enough, you can make a profit.

I personally go each way on horses with odds of at least 8/1 at 1/4 of the odds. This way, you stand a better chance of securing a profit by the amount of your each-way stake.

Let me explain with the following example below.

Example:

Knight Destroyer backed at 8/1 with a stake of £5 Each Way.

Total stake: £10 (£5 on the Win bet and £5 on the Each Way bet).

Result: 3rd at 8/1 (it could finish 2nd/3rd, 4th, or even 5th if the Betfred Each Way Places offer had been applied).

Return: 1/4 odds at 8/1 = 2/1 plus each way stake of £5 returned = £15.

Profit: £5

Note the Types of Horse Races that pay out 1/4 or 1/5 odds Each Way and how many runners they need to have.

  • All races of 5 to 7 runners: 1/4 odds on the first two places.
  • Handicaps of more than 16 runners: 1/4 odds on the first four places.
  • Handicaps of 12 to 15 runners: 1/4 odds on the first three places.
  • All other races with more than eight runners: 1/5 odds on first three places.
  • On horse races with less than five runners it's win only.

Betfred has many beneficial horse racing promotions for punters like me who bet on the gee-gees. My favourite is the Lucky 15 combo bonuses, where you get paid at 3 x the odds on only one winner.

Take a look at the page where I have compared all the Lucky 15 bonuses and returns on one winner against the leading online bookies.

I have also compared Lucky 31 and 63 combination bets for punters who like to combine more than four horses in a bet.

Betfred's Extra Places: Your Key to Bigger Payouts!

For horse racing fans and bettors looking for an edge, Betfred’s Extra Place Races offers a compelling proposition that can turn an ordinary betting day into an extraordinary payout opportunity.

This feature, available to new and existing customers, enhances your chances of winning by expanding the number of places paid out in selected races. In this review, I'll share my insights and personal experiences with this exciting offer, highlighting how it could be the key to bigger payouts.

Overview of Betfred's Extra Place Races

Betfred's Extra Place Races are specially designated horse races in which the bookmaker increases the number of payout places beyond the standard. This means that if you place an each-way bet, you have a higher chance of your horse finishing in one of the paid places, thus boosting your potential returns.

Eligibility and Participation

Who’s Eligible? All verified online customers of Betfred, both new and existing, are eligible to participate in this offer, making it widely accessible.

How to Qualify: To qualify, place each-way single or each-way multiple bets on any of the nominated races on the specified day. This straightforward approach ensures that all participants have a clear path to potentially benefit from the extra places.

Exclusions and Payout Details

What Won’t Qualify: Ante-Post bets do not qualify for this offer. Understanding that bets must be placed on the race day to count towards the extra places is crucial.

Payout Details: If your selection finishes in one of the extended places, Betfred will pay you out at 1/5 the odds. Winnings are added to your balance with the settlement of the race market, making the process as seamless as possible.

Limitations and Strategic Considerations

Betfred’s Extra Place Races come with specific conditions regarding the number of runners:

  • For 3 extra places, fewer than 6 runners will revert to standard place terms.
  • For 4 extra places, fewer than 12 runners will revert to standard place terms.
  • And so forth, increasing with the number of places and runners.

Dead heat rules also apply, affecting payouts if two or more horses finish in a tie for any paying places.

My Personal Betting Experience

I recently took advantage of this offer during a high-profile race day.

I placed several each-way bets on races offering up to 5 extra places. In one particular race, where my chosen horse was not a favorite and had 15/1 odds, I ended up finishing in the newly added fifth place. This resulted in a surprisingly good return on my each-way bet, showcasing the value of Betfred’s expanded place terms.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Increased chances of earning a payout with more places covered.
  • Open to all verified users, making it highly accessible.
  • Payments are processed swiftly upon race settlement.

Cons:

  • It is limited to races selected by Betfred, which may not include every race of interest.
  • Minimum runner conditions can occasionally negate the extra places if not met.
  • It excludes Ante-Post bets, which might disappoint some punters.

Conclusion

Betfred’s Extra Place Races are a fantastic opportunity to increase their potential winnings through each-way betting. This feature offers more chances to win and adds an extra layer of excitement to race days. While there are some limitations and strategic considerations to remember, the overall benefit of potentially higher payouts makes it a valuable option for savvy bettors.

Whether you’re a seasoned punter or a casual enthusiast, Betfred’s Extra Place Races could be your key to unlocking bigger payouts. Always remember to gamble responsibly, considering the risks and rewards of each bet.

FAQ's

How many places is Betfred paying out on?

Betfred will pay out via its Extra Place Races offer up to 7 places - providing the offer applies to the race and there are 26 runners or more.

What are the Betfred each way rules?

The Betfred rules for each way bets are as follows:

Handicaps – 16 or more runners one quarter the odds – first four places
Handicaps – 12-15 runners one quarter the odds – first three places
All other non-handicap races of 8 or more runners one fifth the odds – first three places
Races of 5, 6 or 7 runners – one quarter the odds – first two places
Less than 5 runners – the place money is invested to win

Betfred each-way bets are settled on the first two places in all horse races. The place part of an each-way bet is settled at 1/4 odds (Handicap race) or 1/5 odds (Non-handicap race) for the place.

If a horse is withdrawn before coming under starters orders, or if there are less than three runners in a race, then all bets will be void. In the event of a dead heat, the stake money will be divided equally between the number of horses involved in the dead heat.

Does Betfred pay 4th place?

Betfred does not pay out a win for 4th place in horse racing. In all cases, bookmakers will only pay out on 4th places if you place an each way bet where they pay out on horses that finish in the top three, four or five positions and sometimes six - if the amount of runners in the race meets the requirement.

How many places does an each way bet pay?

An each-way bet pays out on two separate parts of the bet: the win part and the place part. The win part is a straight bet on the horse to win, while the place part is a bet on the horse to finish in the top three or four (depending on the race).

If your horse wins, you'll receive both the win and place payouts. If your horse finishes second or third (or fourth, depending on the race), you will only receive the place payout. The number of places paid out varies by race and bookmaker, but it's typically between two and four places.

How many places do Betfred pay on the Grand National?

Betfred pay on the first five places in the Grand National. The Grand National is a handicap steeplechase that takes place annually at Aintree Racecourse, near Liverpool, England. It is one of the most famous horse races in the world and attracts a large number of bettors each year.

Betting on the Grand National can be very exciting, but it's essential to do your research before placing any bets.

How long does Betfred take to pay winnings?

Betfred usually pays out winnings within 24 hours of the bet being settled. However, it can take longer depending on the payment method you use.

If you withdraw your funds to a debit card, it may take up to five working days for the money to appear in your account. If you choose to receive your winnings via bank transfer, it can take between three and five working days for the funds to be transferred.

What time does Betfred pay out?

Betfred pays out winnings as soon as the event has finished.

If you have placed a bet on an event that is still in progress, your winnings will be paid out once the event has concluded.

The time it takes for funds to appear in your account depends on the payment method used. For example, if you use a debit card, the funds should be available immediately.

However, if you use a bank transfer, it can take up to three working days for the funds to appear in your account.

Is Betfred instant payout?

Betfred offers a variety of payment methods for customers to withdraw their winnings. The time it takes for the funds to reach your account depends on the method you choose.

For example, if you use an e-wallet like PayPal or Skrill, you can expect your winnings to be transferred instantly.

However, if you choose to withdraw your funds via bank transfer, it may take up to 3-5 working days for the money to appear in your account.

Betfred also offers a same-day payout service called Fast Bank Transfer which allows you to receive your winnings within 24 hours.

Hi im really confused i came 5th on the grand national. I saw online about 6 places so my work colleague put our bets on in the shop as it is next to our work and we had to work all day through the races. But going to pick up winnings they said theyll only place 4 which sounds ridiculous especially knowing we have a ladbrookes and william hill opposite who are placing 5th in store. So have i lost money for picking the wrong shop to place my bets with? I know its only a small amount as i only put £5 each way but it seems ridiculous

  4. Avatar of Andy Nelson Andy Nelson says:

    Hi Naomi,

That’s hard luck and I’m surprised it was only 4 places on the Grand National paid out in shops with so many runners surely they would have done 5 each way. I do all my betting online and you get a better deal by doing it that way. The promotions are run separately for shops and online and don’t apply to both I’m afraid.

Hi my horse finished 5th today in the ebor and i did it each way at a betfred shop will i get a return back

    1. Avatar of Andy Nelson Andy Nelson says:

      Hi Mark,

It’s best to check in the shop itself as online it would have been only the 4 places that paid out each way.

      Cheers,

      Andy
