Chelsea vs Wolverhampton Preview

Chelsea will be going into their home game against the Wolves without their manager Frank Lampard, sacked on the morning of January 25th after a rough passage of games for the Blues. Chelsea have just one win to show from their last 5 Premier League outings while their forthcoming rivals have fared even worse, going victoryless through six games.

Among the title favourites when the season started, Chelsea are presently struggling to stay in the top half and positioned at 9th on the points table after 19 games. Nuno Espirito Santo's Wolves are also through their worst season since they returned to the Premier League in 2018-19.

Having garnered just 22 points from their 19 outings the Wolves are in the 14th spot and seven points adrift of Chelsea. While Chelsea were humbled 0-2 by Leicester City in their last League fixture, the Wolves will be going into the Stamford Bridge clash after a humiliating 2-3 loss at home to relegation candidates West Bromwich.

Chelsea & Wolverhampton Recent Form

As for team news, Chelsea will be without the services of N'Golo Kante who continues to nurse a hamstring injury. Other than that, the Blues don't have any injury issues as such.

The Wolves on the other hand have been plagued with injuries with the in-form Daniel Podence joining long-term absentees Raul Jimenez, Jonny Castro and Fernando Marcal on the unfit list.

Chelsea probable XI in 4-3-3 formation: Mendy (goal); James, Thiago Silva, Rudiger, Chilwell; Kovacic, Jorginho; Ziyech, Havertz, Pulisic; Werner

Wolves probable XI in 4-3-3 formation: Patricio (goal); Boly, Coady, Saiss; Semedo, Dendoncker, Neves, Ait Nouri; Traore, Pedro Neto; Fabio Silva

Whilst goals haven’t proved to be a problem for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, defensively they have been found wanting with no clean sheet to their name in the league since October. Nuno Santo's side have let in as many as 29 goals this season leaving them with a negative goal difference of 8.

The Blues haven’t fared much better at the back, keeping just two clean sheets in their last nine league matches while once boasting the best defense in the League. With main striker Timo Werner going goalless for over a dozen games, scoring has become difficult with the Blues finding the back of the net only four occasions from their last 5 outings.

With both sides desperate for a win, the Wednesday game could be expected to be tight and cagey. Chelsea will have a point to prove without their boss Lampard around and will be the more determined outfit of the two.

Moreover, there will be revenge on the minds after having suffered a 1-2 defeat in the reverse fixture in December-mid at the Molineux. The Wolves can be extremely well-drilled against top sides, but with so many of their top men absent in the attack the going could be tough for Nuno Santo's men.
