Former Euro Women’s Tournament Winners

The 2022 edition of the tournament will be the 13th UEFA Women’s Euro competition.

West Germany/Germany is the all-time leader in Women’s Euro wins with eight wins.

Six of those eight wins came in consecutive tournaments.

Here is a look at the previous winners:

  • Sweden 1984
  • Norway 1987
  • West Germany 1989
  • Germany 1991
  • Norway 1993
  • Germany 1995
  • Germany 1997
  • Germany 2001
  • Germany 2005
  • Germany 2009
  • Germany 2013
  • Netherlands 2017

Who are the Favourites to Win the Euro 2022 Women’s Tournament?

Spain are the favourites according to the bookies pre-tournament.

  • Spain 7/2
  • England 4/1
  • France 5/1
  • Netherlands 6/1
  • Sweden 6/1
  • Germany 7/1
  • Norway 14/1
  • Denmark 20/1
  • Italy 33/1
  • Switzerland 80/1
  • Austria 100/1
  • Iceland 100/1
  • Belgium 100/1
  • Finland 150/1
  • Portugal 250/1
  • Northern Ireland 500/1

The Spanish have a strong squad made up mostly of Barcelona players.

The problem for Spain is the absence of two key players. Alexia Putellas is ruled out with an ACL injury. Star player Jenni Hermoso is also ruled out of the tournament.

The absence of both players could really hurt Spain’s chances of winning the Euro tournament.

England is playing on home soil, and they will have strong support at each match.

The Lionesses’ opening match at Old Trafford against Austria was sold out well in advance, so expect a strong performance from the England women’s team.

France is another top European team in women’s football.

The French have never won this competition, but they do have a number of excellent players.

Lyon’s women’s team is coming off a Champions League Final win against Barcelona – unexpectedly – and a number of the national team’s players compete with the perennial French domestic champions.

Paris Saint-Germain's women have sent a number of players to the squad as well.

The Dutch are the reigning Euro champions and will be hungry to regain their title.

Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema has scored 94 career goals for the Dutch national team.

She will be dangerous in the final third for the team.

The Dutch women not only won the 2017 edition of the Euros, but followed it up by finishing second at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019.

Who are the Dark Horses to Win the Euro 2022 Women’s Tournament?

The entire women’s tournament is stacked with strong teams.

Sixteen of the best women’s teams in Europe will battle for the tournament trophy.

As in every football tournament, there are some dark horses that could win the Euro 2022 Women’s Tournament.

Perhaps the biggest dark horse is Norway.

The Norwegians are in Group A along with England.

Norway is 14/1 to win the tournament, which offers excellent odds to anyone looking to bet on a dark horse to win.

Norway’s Ada Hegerberg is one of the top women’s players in the world.

The Lyon forward has been on the outs with the Norwegian Football Federation due to several issues. She is now back in the fold and ready to take her place in the team.

Hegerberg missed the entire 2020-21 season due to a terrible knee injury.

She played just 26 times last term after returning from injury.

Still, Hergerberg scored 16 goals for Lyon. Not only is she a star player, but Hegerberg was the first-ever Ballon d'Or Féminin winner. Watch out for Norway.

Germany is an eight-time winner of the tournament, so they cannot be counted out.

The Germans only reached the quarterfinals at the most recent Women’s Euros. Sweden is another former champion.

The Swedes reached the quarterfinals or better in the last seven editions of the competition, but did not win any of those events.

Who are the Longshots to Win the Euro 2022 Women’s Tournament?

The biggest long shot of the tournament is Northern Ireland. The Northern Irish will play in their first-ever Euro tournament.

The ladies from Northern Ireland are at odds of 500/1.

Northern Ireland is in Group A with England, Austria, and Norway. They are unlikely to get through the group.

Portugal is another long shot at the Euros.

The Portuguese did not originally qualify for the event.

Russia was banned from the Women’s Euros due to the war in Ukraine, and Portugal replaced them.

The Portuguese are at odds of 250/1 to win the competition.

Group D looks wide open on paper.

France is the cream of the crop in the group, while Italy, Belgium, and Iceland are all looking for the runners-up place.

The Azzurre have a squad solely made up of domestic players. The Italian domestic women’s game continues to improve.

The Italians could translate that improvement into a deep run at the Women’s Euros.

Who will win the Euro 2022 Women’s Tournament?

It is difficult to look past England to win the Euro 2022 Women’s Tournament.

The Lionesses are in excellent form ahead of the tournament and will be playing in front of their home crowd.

Spain are the bookies’ favourite, but with two key players missing, it could finally be the England women’s national team’s time to win silverware.

If the Lionesses are going to win the tournament, they must see off Norway, Germany, and Sweden, three of the top contenders for the trophy.
