Murray Withdrawal Right Decision Updated for September 2025

Updated: 23rd September 2025
Andy Murray could not have suffered an injury at a more perfect time this week, as he was forced to pull out of the Toronto Masters with a knee problem.
The Scot blamed his superb success at the Olympic Games for his below-par performance against Flavio Cipolla, which saw him receive treatment for his left knee during the match.
With the US Open just days away, Murray made the correct decision in pulling out of this tournament. Tennis lovers thinking of gambling on the Scot and taking the current Betfair Tennis odds must now hope that he recovers quickly.
Claiming he felt “stiff and sore” against Cipolla, Murray stated:
Indeed, the 25-year-old should rightly be sore after such a wonderful Olympic campaign. Representing Great Britain, Murray claimed men's singles gold and mixed doubles silver on the same day at Wimbledon, crowning off a stunning week and cementing his place as one of the best players in the world.
The Toronto Masters must have felt like a bit of a comedown for Murray, with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal also pulling out of the tournament. Focus is now thoroughly on Flushing Meadows, where the US Open gets underway on 27 August.
Murray is right to reserve his fitness and energy ahead of a gruelling tournament to come. Federer, Nadal, and Novak Djokovic have all won a Major this year, and will be determined to prove that they are the best in the world with a second at the US Open.
Yet, with Olympic spirit evidently surging through Murray's veins, he will head into the tournament with great confidence in his own ability. Having reached the semi-finals last year, the Scot is on track to go one better this season after his London 2012 medal haul.
This recent injury, therefore, should be taken as a blessing rather than a hurdle, as Murray looks to carry his Olympic momentum into the final major of the season.
Andy Murray is a 389/100 second favourite in the US Open 2012 betting pages on Betfair.
